Goats return to graze at Berkley Riverfront

May 19, 2025

Berkley Riverfront, Kansas City, MO. – It’s a THREE PEAT! Goats returned this morning to continue their work on unwanted vegetation. Port KC will host a tribe of goats along the Riverfront Heritage Trail in Berkley Riverfront for a third year. These goats help clear problematic vegetation taking over nature areas along the Missouri River. Keeping this vegetation under control also creates a safer, more natural environment for trail users. Goat grazing significantly reduces invasive and unwanted species of weeds if used consistently for several years. We have seen great success from this eco-friendly project the last two years.

Goats make Berkley Riverfront their home.

Goats Gone Green, LLC will bring 40 goats to tackle roughly two acres of overgrowth east of the Town of Kansas Bridge. The goats will call Berkley Riverfront home for approximately 15 – 25 days. They are set to arrive Monday, May 19, 2025, at 9:30 a.m. The goats will be introduced to their temporary home east of the ABS bridge.

Goats Gone Green, LLC is part of the Alvis Goat Ranch in Latour, Missouri, roughly an hour south of Kansas City.

“Municipalities, fire departments, transportation departments, even private owners are turning to these low-maintenance grazers for land management. They are highly skilled workers,” explained Kyle Alvis, owner of Goats Gone Green.

Goat grazing has increased in popularity. Goats, with their unique ability to access areas humans can’t, their diverse diet, and productive fertilization, are the perfect solution for Berkley Riverfront with its steep and rocky terrain by the Missouri River. By utilizing goats, Port KC can foster a safe and efficient cleanup process without impacting erosion or the use of harmful chemicals in nature areas. In fact, we envision expanding their footprint with financial support, a goat sponsor, if you will.

“Goats are becoming synonymous with summertime in Berkley Riverfront; our unnamed mascot. Seriously, they provide an invaluable service, open dialogue between our visitors and believe it or not, create a sense of community. We are excited for their return. We can’t say enough about the results from the goats’ hard work,” said Port KC CEO & President Jon Stephens.

Visitors on the trail can observe endless entertainment the goats will provide but should refrain from touching the goats to protect themselves and the animals. The fencing is electric. Instead, Port KC will hold a Goat Meet and Greet from 9 – 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at the Riverfront Heritage Trail. Visitors attending should use BarK’s north parking lot (under the Grand St. Viaduct, next to the Riverfront Heritage Trail. Follow the trail west under the ASB Bridge and goats will be visible on the west side.
