Berkley Riverfront

Kansas City was born on the Missouri River. This area was bustling with homes and businesses by the mid-19th century. But as time went by, locals moved away from the city’s origins. The riverfront became neglected and contaminated. It was even used as a tow lot and a dumping ground, as recently as the 1970s. Yet, it had so much potential to play a vital role in our city and leaders recognized the need to change.

For the past 30 years, progress has been slow to move. Remediation, plans, new plans, new teams, new leaders and finally, the time has come for Berkley Riverfront and the Missouri River to once again play a vital role in Kansas City’s economic future.

Today, CPKC Stadium, which is the first purpose-built stadium for a professional women’s sports team, the Kansas City Current, anchors the 55-acre riverfront. The stadium’s success then spurred the 2023 Master Development Plan for nearly a fifth of the land. The MDP will be mixed-used development; office space, retail, restaurants, residential and community spaces. This will be a walkable and livable neighborhood.

The Stadium wasn’t the first for the Missouri Riverfront. Union Apartments opened in 2016. BarK, a dog park bar located under the Heart of America Bridge, opened in 2019. CORE, another apartment complex on 8 acres, opened in 2022.

Trails, additional park space and amenities continue to be planned for Kansas City’s front yard.
