Project Mica
Project Mica is a transformative development located in Kansas City’s Northland, set to be led by one of the world’s leading tech companies. Spanning nearly 500 acres at the northeast corner of Interstate 435 and Highway 169, the project will include the construction of five hyperscale data center buildings, totaling 1.56 million square feet of critical IT infrastructure. The full development will draw nearly 700 MW of power, supplied by the adjacent Nashua Power Station and onsite substations. Throughout the build-out, the project is expected to generate hundreds of construction and trade jobs, providing an economic boost to local industries.
Port KC has authorized up to $10 billion in taxable revenue bonds to finance the project, with significant tax incentives designed to attract the investment. These include a 25-year, 75% exemption on property taxes, as well as 100% exemptions on local and state sales taxes for construction materials and equipment. The project also gives back to the community, with a commitment to contribute $1.5 million to the Smithville School District’s workforce development program and $250,000 to the Northland Career Center. Both of these payments will be made upfront, regardless of the construction timeline.
Project Mica is not only a major investment in technological infrastructure but also in the local workforce. By prioritizing workforce development through these community contributions, the project aims to provide long-term opportunities in tech and construction fields, equipping the local population with the skills needed to support the growing tech industry. This development will help reshape the region’s economy, fueling both technological progress and economic growth for years to come.
